How to find inspiration for your building project

Lack of inspiration sometimes comes from not knowing where to look, or from looking in the same places for too long. In this blog, you’ll find six ways to inspire yourself full of wants and ideas for your next project.

Whether you’re making changes to your existing home or building a new one from scratch. you’re going to need some inspiration to get things off the ground (along with lots of research too!)

Through research and inspiration, you will be able to gather a clear idea of what you like, which is essential before appointing an architect or interior designer.

  1. TV Shows

Some of the best inspiration can be sat right in front of you; you just have to take notice of it. Aside from Grand Designs, we’re shown a variety of immensely stylish television show sets with beautifully thought out interiors, so take notice of these if you want to freshen up on your ideas. For Mid Century Modern style, think Mad Men or Killing Eve for Parisian Chic.

The programs that will inspire you are entirely dependent on your taste. But by looking deeper into the architectural and interior styles on your favourite TV programs, you may find you’re drawn towards certain styles, colours or even items of furniture.

  1. Nature

Nature can inspire when it comes to colour palettes, textures, patterns and artworks.

Next time you’re walking through the countryside, consider your surroundings and how they make you feel. If you feel a sense of relaxation, this could be an indication that earthy greens and greys would work well in the parts of your home intended for relaxation.

Natural materials are very successful when used in building projects, as well as interiors, and are often more environmentally sustainable too.

  1. Magazines

If you want to immerse yourself in home ideas, magazines are excellent sources of inspiration. You can use images that you’re drawn to, to put together your own mood-board and cut out and save any how-to/practical tips articles that may come in handy.

Great reads include magazines such as Ideal Home, Country Living, Better Homes & Gardens and Good House Keeping, as well as Grand Designs to name but a few.

  1. Hotels and Spas

Hotels and Spas can give you some of the best décor ideas that are usually inexpensive to re-create in your own home. These could be bathroom tiles, bedlinen or storage ideas you can’t live without.

  1. Social Media

Pinterest and Instagram will become your new best friend while you’re looking for inspirational ideas for your home. There are hundreds of accounts dedicated to inspiring new homeowners and design professionals, and all these images are available at your fingertips.

To source, the best ideas and images, try searching for hashtags such as ‘#HomeIdeas #HomeInspo and #InteriorDesign as these hashtags will contain the content that you’re looking for.

  1. Fashion

Interior trends tend to follow clothing trends, especially when it comes to colours, so it’s good to keep this in mind while looking for décor inspiration.

Don’t forget that trends are transitory and will change frequently. If you’re not colour confident it’s best to keep the main colour palette of your home neutral and place fashion-inspired furnishings into your home.

Architectural design also goes through trends but can be timeless if designed and detailed well, whatever the style you choose for your project.
